new concept mobile phones

while looking for reviews of cool smartphones i’ve just stumbled over these two pages on mobileburn.com showing concept mobile devices from ces ’04. i particularly like the idea behind sharp’s new 3d screens. amazingly simple and obviously it works.. conclusion: in geekness, urban japanese folks are way ahead of the rest of the world ;)

google comes to zurich, switzerland :)

nzz: google kommt nach zürich (in german)

welcome in switzerland, google! :)

here’s nzz’s interview with urs hölzle (in german) (his google hp). Interesting. I like urs hölzle’s side-blow to the overly complicated us visa application customs :) concluding from his answers, zurich/switzerland seems to be a really good place for google’s european r&d branch office.. promising and probably a sign for other us companies to open a branch office in switzerland too ;)

[update: symlink-story (german), jobs at google’s branch office in zurich. google will be at the vis kontaktparty on feb 2]

academic ranking of world universities?

academic ranking of world universities

according to this study, the university of zurich is ranked among the top 50 universities in the world (pdf), top 10 in europe, and as number 2 in switzerland (following eth). criteria were only “scientific” ones: number of nobel prize winners, number of very frequently cited researchers, number of in “nature” or “science” published papers, number of papers listed on the “science citation index expanded” and on the “social sciences citation index”. they also calculated performance per researcher employed at the institution.

well, nice to hear.. despite of “never believe statistics you didn’t fake yourself” ;). if we assume that these guys did their job right, then these results are somewhat surprising indeed. for example there are quite many universities i would have expected to be ranked better, based on their reputation. e.g.

6. massachusetts institute of technology (mit, usa)
25. swiss federal institute of technology (eth, switzerland)
60. technological university of munich (tum, germany)
61. carnegie mellon university (usa)
80. purdue (usa)

to name a few. somes i would have expected in worse positions (mostly american universities). possible explanations there are many.. one can be found here (#6). i suppose if they would include better balanced measures (see e.g. #8), then this ranking would be significantly different anyway.

a thing which is of greater concern to me atm is the fact that within the same university, even within the same study course (“cs/it & business”), standards can differ significantly. just two days ago, a couple of friends and yours truly experienced that final marks can vary a lot, depending on what elective subject you choose/chose (mild vs. demanding professor) and whether you had the luck to study according to new regulations (“aps” – shorter studies and higher marks in average) or according to the old regulations (“po-95” – longer studies and lower marks in average -> the latter except for those few who chose “multimedia” and/or “information management” [= “mis” for u.s. readers] just before the according chair holders became “emeritus” about 1.5 years ago ;)

another hot topic currently discussed is the transition to “m. sc.” studies. in fact, our studies are harder than most u.s. “m. sc.” studies, yet we don’t have this “recognition” (at least on the paper) so far. don’t get me wrong – i’m the last one who’d care about titles, rankings and such. but as most others obviously do, there’s no other choice than taking it seriously too (unless i’d intend to spend the rest of my life as a yogi meditating the whole day long.. which wouldn’t even be that bad, actually ;))

so: always be prudent in how you judge people ;)

magnolia cms

recently, i’ve checked out magnolia cms. it can be installed and configured very quickly (in about 10 minutes). editing is easy as well. in fact, i’ve never seen any cms with such an ease of use before. sure, it only offers basic features so far (story publishing, simple forms, basic content-management), but my impression of it was a good one. i particularly like its emphasis on standards, notably the upcoming jcr (java content repositories).

so far, i haven’t taken a look at its internals though. i thus can’t comment on code-quality, architecture, documentation etc. yet.

all in all recommendable for anybody who doesn’t need bells and whistles but simple yet flexible, easy content management with an excellent protection of investment (both open-source and built on standards). well suitable for personal, soho and smb use.

let’s move on :)

hm.. what about starting an experimental video/film project? i’d love to shoot films for sure :)

i’d particularly like to experiment with shooting in 3d, unfortunately i lack the gear for it (difficult to get, mostly custom-built cameras, not feasible). however, for a start, two dimensions might be more appropriate anyway.. tiny, loosely related video snippets, arranged to form experimental episodes.. that would be interesting :) eventually in videolog-style? mix-in others’ snippets? fascinating possibilities..

i think i’ll keep this “changelog” till this experimental idea takes shape.. first of all, i need to find some time (-> new year’s pledge? ;)

happy new year!

freedesktop.org

recently i’ve revisited freedesktop.org. it’s amazing how fast this community-driven project is making progress! particularly the x server, a better replacement for xfree86’s x server. just take a look at these nice screenshots on keith packard’s page! this x server offers many new features we all have been waiting for, among them hw-accelerated, true transparency, shadows and shades (keith’s explanation of the implementation).

freedesktop.org also hosts a pile of other desktop-related projects. very promising: cairo, a “vector graphics library with cross-device output support”. this will enable quartz-/quartz extreme-like, hardware-accelerated, device-independent pdf display/output, but even with greater flexibility (it also supports postscript display/output) :)

go freedesktop, go! :)
